Part 3: Recover Deleted Files from Recycle Bin using Command Prompt

Sometimes, the files in your recycle bin become invisible just because the recycle bin's INFO file is damaged. They are not actually lost. Under this circumstances, you can restore a file by searching for the file name and then rename it. (How to search a file by name: Go to Start on computer -> Search Files or Folders)

If your files still can't be found, you can delete the INFO file. In this way, Windows will create a new INFO file for you when you restart your computer the next time. You might find your files reappear in the recycle bin after the reboot. Steps to delete the INFO file using Command Prompt:

  1. For Windows 10, 8, 7 users, go to Start -> Programs -> MS-DOS Prompt; For Windows XP users, go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt.

  2. Input “CD \RECYCLED” and press Enter

  3. Input “ATTRIB -H INF*” and press Enter

  4. Input “DEL INFO*.” and press Enter

  5. Finally input “EXIT”
